Historical Highlights

1892 First Phoenix YMCA Committee Organized.
1907 First Building Fund drive which raised $103,000.
1911 First YMCA Building at 2nd Avenue and Monroe.
1912 Phoenix YMCA Incorporated.
1936 First Membership “Round-Up” with a goal of 300 members.
1938 Location of sites and funds made available by Barry Goldwater for Sky-Y Camp in Prescott.
1942 East and West Maricopa Branches organized.
1944 Building Fund Campaign for $500,000; goal exceeded. Land was acquired for current site.
1950 Second campaign needed because of war creating shortage of materials and increased costs post-war; goal exceeded.
1952 Dedication of new building on 1st Avenue.
1956 Mesa, Scottsdale, Tempe Branches chartered.
1957 Metropolitan Y Organizational Chart was adopted.
1958 Downtown, Northeast and Northwest (now Chris-Town) Branches were chartered.
1959 South Mountain became an Extension.
1960 Downtown physical facility expanded.
1963 Mesa Branch became first facility unit.
1966 Capital Fund Campaign.
1967 Branch building construction started.
1968 New facility dedications; Northeast, Chris-Town, Scottsdale, West Valley and Sky-Y Camp.
1970 Dedication of South Mountain’s new building.
1973 Contribution of Chauncey Ranch by Tom Chauncey.
1974 Tempe Branch chartered.
1976 South Mountain chartered as Branch.
1978 Northwest became an Extension of Chris-Town.
1980 Capital Campaign raised $3,000,000+.
1981 Chandler became an extension of Mesa.
1983 Chris-Town facility was constructed.
1983 Land acquired from City of Tempe on 99 year lease for new building.
1984 Northwest extension was chartered as a Branch.
1984 Scottsdale Branch moved to Kachina School and property was sold enabling the purchase of property on Scottsdale Road & Shea Blvd.
1985 Chandler Extension was chartered as a branch.
1986 Capital Campaign raised $3,000,000+.
1987 New Scottsdale facility opened in January.
1987 New Tempe facility opened in October.
1989 Renovation of Downtown Membership facility completed at a cost of $1,500,000.
1990 Mesa Branch added 8,000 square feet and re-modeled the existing facility at a cost of $600,000.
1990 Scottsdale/PV Fitness Room was expanded by 1,200 square foot.
1990 Northwest Branch name was changed to Glendale/Peoria Branch and the office was moved to Glendale.
1990 Phoenix and Valley of the Sun YMCA officially became Valley of the Sun YMCA.
1993 Ahwatukee Extension established.
1994 South Scottsdale Leadership Center established.
1994 Urban Services established as a branch.
1995 Ahwatukee Extension was chartered as a branch.
1995 South Mountain YMCA opens new 18,000 square foot facility on Olympic Drive in March at a cost of $1,400,000.
1995 Scottsdale YMCA opened a 13,000 square foot addition in May at a cost of $900,000.
1995 Tempe YMCA opened a 11,000 sq. ft. addition in October at a cost of $900,000.
1996 South Mountain YMCA opened new gymnasium at Olympic Drive in July at a cost of $650,000.
1997 Glendale/Peoria YMCA opens a new 11,000 sq. ft. facility on the campus of American Graduate School of International Management at a cost of $1.5 million.
1997 Deer Valley Extension established in fall of the year.
1998 Chandler construction begins in February for new facility.
1998 Gilbert/East Mesa Extension established.
1998 Capital Campaign raised $8 million.
1999 Chandler/Gilbert YMCA opened a new 13,000 sq. ft. facility on the grounds of Chandler Regional Hospital.
1999 Flagstaff Extension established.
1999 Yuma Extension established.
1999 Ahwatukee Foothills YMCA opened a new 5,000 sq. ft. “state of the art” Child Development Center.
2000 Yuma facility opened April 2000.
2001 Ahwatukee groundbreaking – August 2001.
2002 Ahwatukee Foothills Family YMCA opens a new 33,000 square ft. facility
2003 Copper Basin ground breaking
2003 Southwest Valley Regional YMCA chartered
2003 South Mountain Sports Complex was built
