Health and Wellness back to top

Way to Go Michael Bedore!

               Before                               After

YMCA member Michael Bedore has undergone an amazing transformation over the last 9 months. After struggling with a weight problem, reaching up to 480lbs, he decided to make a drastic change.
“After eating mindlessly for the past 30 years health issues required I take control of my life.  For years I found it quite difficult to follow a healthy eating plan or implement a workout routine.  After two years of counseling at the Scottsdale Healthcare Bariatric Center, I underwent bypass surgery in 2009.
Before surgery, my weight topped out at 480lbs.  Today, 9 months after the surgery I weigh 215lbs with my goal weight of 175lbs in sight... I now have healthy gums with no dental problems and am no longer diabetic! The changes in nutrition have driven my success and exercise has added to my success.”
He has been listed as the top member for total weight lifted here at the Downtown Y and is often ranked in the top ten for the number of cardio hours logged weekly! He attributes his success to his rigid workout routine of two hours a day, five days a week, while walking an average of 3.5 miles a day! Congratulations, Michael!

Downtown Believes In You back to top

The Downtown Believes in You program provided 220 youth from Genesis Academy, Gateway Charter High School, South Pointe High School, Young Life and the YMCA an amazing celebratory evening on April 14th at the Hyatt Regency. The young people visited with 21 community booths and engaged in conversation with community leaders. The evening's entertainment was provided by youth from the Maryvale YMCA’s Kroszover Entertainment. Everyone was truly inspired by the keynote speaker and author, Stella Pope Duarte.

A special thanks to the committee led by Greg Stanton and all of the program sponsors including Title Sponsor GoDaddy.com and Presenting Sponsor Walgreens.

Inexpensive Estate Planning Strategies

No matter what your net worth or your stage of life, you should still give consideration to planning your estate. Estate planning has two fundamental goals:

1) it allows you to plan for your healthcare and asset management in the event of your disability or incapacity;

2) it arranges for the management and transfer of your assets (all personal property, investments, real estate, and additional belongings) upon your death.

§ The discussion will include an overview of the common pitfalls that business owners face and how Revocable Living Trusts, LLC’s, Partnerships and other types of estate plans need to be specifically used for a successful estate planning outcome

Parking Update back to top

Thank you to all members for displaying their YMCA parking decal on their vehicle. Phoenix Parking Control has started ticketing unauthorized vehicles in our lot. Here are a few reminders to help us ensure there is a parking spot for you:

  • Current YMCA members must display a parking decal on their vehicle. (If you are using a sunshade, please make sure your decal is on top of the sunshade and visible through the windshield)
  • There is no parking under the billboard. This is a throughway. Four “No Parking” signs are posted on the billboard posts.
  • The YMCA parking lot can be used for 2 hours for YMCA facility use only.
  • All guests must obtain a “Visitor” parking pass at the member service desk.
  • There is no parking in the alley along the west side of our building. You risk being ticketed by Phoenix Parking Control and the City of Phoenix Police Department.
  • Additional parking is available in the lot just south of us Monday – Friday from 4:30pm – 10:00pm for our YMCA members.
  • ASU students should park in the ASU designated lots.
If you have not obtained your YMCA decal, please bring your current membership card to the member service desk. Thank you for your support.
