Our Mission
Vision:
Our Goal is for the YMCA to be the premier partner of choice for solving community problems. Collaboration with the city, county, and a multitude of agencies and organization will allow us to integrate through off site locations and existing YMCA branches the programs and services that will make our community stronger.
Education, workforce readiness and enhancing life skills and civic engagement in young adults are important building blocks in our efforts for healthy community.
We applaud our partners that make these important programs possible: Maricopa County, City of Phoenix, PSA Art Awakenings, Homebase Youth Services, State Farm, Magellan and all or donors whose generous gifts make it possible to Build Community!

Educational Attainment/ Career Preparation
• i-Learn Drop-out Recovery Program
Started in 2006, this program has served over 600 high school students in recovering high school credits during its first five years of implementation. Support for this program allows participants to overcome barriers that have led them to drop out or fall behind in school. The program is available at six locations in partnerships with local schools and districts. Locations include the Lincoln Family Downtown YMCA, ChrisTown YMCA, Maryvale YMCA, Southwest Valley Regional YMCA (Goodyear), Chandler YMCA, and the Pauite Center in South Scottsdale. Youth work on line to earn their high school diploma and are guided toward setting goals for college and/or work life. Serves youth 14-21.

• Las Artes de Maricopa County * Project Achieve
The YMCA Las Artes de Maricopa County, a collaborative program with PSA Art Awakenings and funded through Maricopa County gives dropouts, ages 16 to 21, perhaps their last chance to improve their basic literacy skills and prepare for their GED while earning money producing a public art project. In the process, the youth also learn work readiness and life skills. The program is located at 43rd Avenue and Missouri and serves low income, out-of-school youth. Project Achieve, funded through the City of Phoenix, offers work readiness skills and GED preparation through the Maryvale YMCA and Homebase Youth Services site. Both in school youth and out of school, low income youth, ages 14-21 are eligible for this program. This Summer both programs will also offer summer work experience for low income young adults, 14-24. •

Support for this program allows students in grades 9-12 learn how the juvenile justice system works by serving as a juror and hearing real juvenile court cases. Teen Court allows juvenile offenders to be judged by their peers in a simulated court setting. This collaboration with Maricopa County Juvenile Probation Department is now located at 16 court/school/YMCA and has served over 500 first time offenders this past year.

• Youth & Government
Youth & Government is a hands-on experience in state government, allowing students to play a role in the legislative branch as well as work in the print media or as a lobbyist. Each December students convene for a weekend at the State Capitol where they play out their selected role in a mock legislative session. Support for this program allows 100 students to participate annually.

• International Initiatives
The International Committee strengthens the Valley of the Sun YMCA's commitment to International programming in the YMCA through two key partnerships:
  • Border Initiative Coalition which provides shelter to and seeks to reunite teens with their families in Mexico after attempting to enter the United States.
  • YMCA of Mexico City that will be centered on teen and financial development.
• Living Well With a Disability
The YMCA with funding through Magellan is working to build capacity in the community to serve persons with disability. Currently as we build a full coalition of agencies who can respond together we will be implementing some pilot classes sessions. For more information on a class or to join this coalition, contact Kathryn Robins at (602)509-2455.
