Valley of the Sun YMCA

The Y is a champion for healthy lifestyles in our communities and seeks to work with community partners to reverse the obesity epidemic. The Y is a leader in preventing type 2 diabetes in our youth and families. If we continue at the current pace, 1 in 3 children born after the year 2000 will develop type 2 diabetes. Currently 1 in 4 American adults, that’s 57million people, have pre-diabetes. The Y’s diabetes prevention program has been proven to prevent or delay the onset of the disease by almost 60 percent. This is achieved with simple lifestyle changes such as eating healthier and incorporating physical activity up to 150 minutes per week, or achieving a modest 7 percent weight reduction.

The Valley of the Sun YMCA advocates for laws and policies that support children, families and communities as well as collaborative funding opportunities for YMCA initiatives. We work with elected officials to strengthen governmental policies supporting nonprofit, community-based organizations to help build healthier neighborhoods. Together, we are changing lives.

Community Partnerships

The Valley of the Sun YMCA and A. T. Still University have found a natural synergy in their commitment and dedication to the community’s health and wellness needs. The Ross Farnsworth East Valley YMCA celebrated its grand opening on A.T. Still University’s Arizona campus with a VIP reception on October 23, 2009. The partnership offers unique life-enhancing programs and fitness facilities to East Valley community members as well as to University students, faculty, and staff. This unique partnership brings unprecedented benefits to not only Mesa and the surrounding communities, but to society overall.

Paradise Valley Community College, the Desert Foothills YMCA and the Foothills Community Foundation have partnered to provide education options, meeting spaces and recreational facilities in one central location. The center is designed as a neighborhood gathering place for people of all ages to exercise both their minds and bodies, bringing together the surrounding Northwest Valley communities of Carefree, Cave Creek, Phoenix and Scottsdale. The college includes six classrooms equipped with the latest technology for academic instruction plus personal and advanced computer facilities. Adjoining the PVCC is the 9,000-square-foot FCF-Holland Community Center, which includes headquarters for the foundation, a senior center and meeting spaces for nonprofit community group partners. The state-of-the-art Desert Foothills YMCA offers quality health & fitness opportunities, swimming, climbing, sports venues plus endless programs for kids, teens, and adults. In the rich tradition of the Y, this center will be a place where confidence is born, dreams are discovered and a community comes together.
